Unique and colorful sculpture of a laughing hippopotamus sitting on an altar with images of Buddha's. Antoon van Wijk (1952) often shows a sense of humour in his animal sculptures as can be seen here. He is fascinated by the oriental religions. These influences are not only visible in the use of Buddha's but also in his use of colors. Different textures and colors are a result of the pâte de verre technique (wax casting technique) combined with papier mâché and gold leaf which he used during the production. Antoon van Wijk studied at de Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam from 1979-1984. Van Wijk often uses a casting technique for his art glass sculptures, in which oxides are added to color the glass. HIs expressive and unique works are true collectors items.
