At the beginning of the 20th century Dutch the city of Purmerend became an important centre of Art Nouveau pottery. One of the most prominent manufacturers was Wed. (widow) N.S.A. Brantjes & Co. The factory was internationally very successful with its beautiful, colourful Art Nouveau pots and vases, decorated with floral motifs. Brantjes vases are made of clay that is white when fired. At first Brantjes made traditional Delfts blue pottery, but quickly switched to Art Nouveau floral motifs similar to Rozenburg pottery. The vases were distinguished by curving handles that virtually touched each other above the neck opening. All products were painted by hand and have a shiny colorless glaze.
