'Het IJ aan de Ruyterkade' was painted by Piet van Wijngaerdt around 1920. The IJ is a river in Amsterdam. The dark tones are characteristic for the Bergen School (1915-1925), of which Van Wijngaerdt was one of the founders. In the lower right corner of the painting you can see two steamboats and a part of Amsterdam Central Station (built in 1881-1889). The painting is signed on the right side with 'Piet van Wijngaerdt' and on the back with 'Het Y a/d de Ruyterkade, Piet van Wijngaerdt'.
