This appealing ceramic figure of a bird by Etie Van Rees was made in the 1950s. The object is signed with the artist's monogram EvR at the bottom. Etie Van Rees (1890-1973) was a painter and started as ceramic artist at a later age. She was born in the Dutch East Indies and moved to the Netherlands in 1919. She has made a lot of (often symbolic) fantasy creatures and is considered one of the most prominent Dutch ceramic artists of the twentieth century. Her fantastic and touching creatures refer to her native country, where she felt unhappy and found comfort in the natural world.
