Ceramic wall plate decorated with glaze, made by Chris Lanooy in 1911. Signed at the bottem 'CJLanooy'. Marked with an old label 'A15. Droefheid [Sorrow], 1911' and another label (546). This kind of label was, among others, used by H.P. Bremmer to catalogue his art objects. In 1911 Lanooy worked at the Wachtelstraat in Gouda. He lived and worked here. He also had four ovens here; one oven could even be heated up to 1600 degrees Celsius. In 1911 Lanooy was represented at a retrospective exhibition of the Gouda pottery in the society 'Ons Genoegen'. In the years 1911-1913 Lanooy made a number of animal sculptures in collaboration with the sculptor Jan Altorf (1876-1955) from The Hague. Possibly they already knew each other from Haga in Purmerend, where they were both designers. Moreover, they were both in contact with the art pedagogue and patron H.P. Bremmer (1871-1956).
