Poul Kjaerholm

Denmark 1929 - 1980

Poul Kjaerholm (1929-1980) started his career as carpenter’s apprentice in 1948. He studied at the Kunsthandvaerkerokolen in Kopenhagen in 1952, where he stayed on as a teacher till 1956. In 1959 he started teaching at the Kongelige Dansk Kunstakademi, of which he became the director in 1976. The furniture of Kjaerholm was largely produced by E. Kold Christensen and Fritz Hansen. Kjaerholm shows in his designs an interest in products that can be produced in large quantities. Favourite elements are leather, wood and steel frames which determine the aesthetic of the simple elegant designs.
