Marianne Brandt

Germany 1893 - 1983

The German painter, sculptor, photographer and designer Marianne Brandt studied at the Bauhaus, where she became head of metal workshop Ruppelwerk in 192. In 1929 she worked for the Walter Gropius architects' office in Berlin and made designs for the Metallwarenfabrik Ruppelwerk in Gotha. In the 1950s she taught for several years at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Dresden and at the Institut für Angewandte Kunst in East Berlin. Her lamps, ashtrays and tea sets are regarded as forerunners of modern industrial design.
