Ceramic man with guitar designed by Anthonie (Amp) Theodorus Smit at the N.V. Koninklijke Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland in Gouda. Smit was educated at the Utrechtse Kunstnijverheidsschool, the Instituut Piersma and the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He has an extensive oeuvre covering different disciplines, from oil paintings and charcoal drawings to ceramics. This ceramic sculpture was manufactured at the N.V. Koninklijke Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, where Smit was appointed designer of decorations in 1929. Here he also designed models, which have been produced for a long time even after he had left the factory. 'Man with guitar' is a subject that is found more than once in his oeuvre, like in his oil paintings.
