Ceramic sculpture of two sitting fantasy animals made by Etie van Rees in circa 1968. The work is signed on the bottom with her monogram. Etie Van Rees (1890-1973) was a painter and started as ceramic artist at a later age. She was born in the Dutch East Indies and moved to the Netherlands in 1919. She has made a lot of (often symbolic) fantasy creatures and is considered one of the most prominent Dutch ceramic artists of the twentieth century. Her fantastical and touching creatures refer to her native country, where she felt unhappy and found comfort in the natural world.
