Chris (C.J.) Lanooy

The Netherlands 1881 - 1948

Chris Lanooy (1881-1948) was a glass designer, decorative artist, pottery painter and potter. In his designs he focused on technique and he therefore like to experiment with his mediums. At the age of fifteen he worked as a pupil pottery painter at N.V. Haagsche Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg. After working for a short time as a decorative painter, Lanooy fully concentrated on pottery in Gouda. He works at Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland in Gouda, and the Purmerendse companies Brantjes and Haga. From 1907 he started as an independent potter and he developed a decoration inspired by the decorative styles from the Far East. In addition, from 1908 Lanooy was also connected to the Glasfabriek Leerdam for which he designs glass and later unicums.
