Alvar Aalto

Finland 1898 - 1976

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898-1976) was a Finnish architect and designer. Alvar Aalto was one of the first and most influential architects of the Scandinavian modern movement. His oeuvre consists of architecture, glass, textiles and furniture. The Aalto vase he designed for the Finnish glass factory Iittala is world-famous, as well as his simple functionalist bentwood furniture. Alvar Aalto and his wife, architect Aino Aalto, co-founded furniture company Artek in 1935 to promote and execute Aalto furniture. His furniture designs showed a combination of art and technology and were produced in series, encouraging a more beautiful everyday life in the home.
